While it is well known that catalytic converters are installed in the exhaust systems of cars, not everyone knows that we can also find them in ships, boats, buses, mining, agricultural or construction machinery, such as cranes, lifts and backhoe loaders. They are mounted where harmful fumes are created as a result of the device’s work, and their task is of course to clean them.

Last week, one of the Contractors brought us 2 catalysts from a backhoe loader.

These were models: 10130556/32667004000/LIEBHERR/METAL and 10130554/32667003000/LIEBHERR/METAL.

 

He did not believe that they have any value. Fortunately, he decided to try and give it for analysis. Why “luckily”? because it turned out that the retail price 10130556/32667004000/LIEBHERR/METAL  as of today (03/04/2019) amounts to PLN 1,452.60, while the other, 10130554/32667003000/LIEBHERR/METAL PLN 602.10. Not bad for seemingly worthless catalysts, right?

Of course, in order to know the value of catalysts, it was necessary to cut the monolith from the center, grind it to a uniform form, and test it in our laboratory. Only the use of specialized equipment – spectrometer, and specialist knowledge allows to precisely determine the content of precious elements in the material provided. As you already know, precious metal prices are constantly changing. Their value at a given moment depends on many different factors. You also know that we are closely monitoring the changes in courses, because they are the most important applications in the automotive industry – in the production of car catalysts. They perform their proper catalytic function and purify the exhaust gases from toxic substances.

Every week, together with Unimetal Recycling, we present you weekly analysis, summarizing what has happened on the precious metals market. This is extremely important for us and our contractors, because the current prices depend on the prices of over 7 800 models of used catalysts from our catalog.

The higher the rates on a given day, the higher the catalysts have. Hence our keen interest in global trends.

We have recently been able to inform you about the record results achieved by palladium. In recent weeks, this metal has achieved a very strong position on the precious metals market. Several times we wrote about historical courses – including the highest so far, amounting to 1 576.60 USD / ounce. This value, palladium, reached March 21 this year.

The price increase of this noble element was not a big surprise for anyone, considering that automotive concerns are rapidly withdrawing from further production of diesels (in which platinum is used). Palladium has become more expensive than gold and platinum, increasing its value by as much as 250% in the last 3 years. Everything through the dieselgate scandal, which we have often mentioned recently. In addition, the sales results of ecological hybrid and electric vehicles are not spectacular.

Companies will therefore bet on gasoline-powered cars. In these vehicles, palladium catalysts are assembled. It would seem, therefore, that the course will continue to grow. In the end, there is a lot of demand, so the matter seemed simple.

It turns out, however, that it is not entirely. Last week we had a huge drop in quotations. A decline that many did not expect. The last few sessions on the metal exchange, significantly cooled the euphoria and optimism of people who invest in palladium. Within a few days, the ozone was cheaper by as much as 11%, and on Wednesday only by as much as 6%, which is the highest one-day drop in almost 20 years.

There has been a certain deficit in palladium for many years. The market needs are big. However, demand may be reduced due to fears of an economic slowdown. It is also worth mentioning that Russia has announced to the world the decision to reduce the extraction of the element. The possible reason is the desire to extort even higher prices on other market players.

The predictions regarding the further fate of palladium are very diverse. As you can see, no scenario is predetermined. Our expectations are not always reflected in reality. It’s worth getting ready for the next good news from us regarding the next records, but at the same time we have to prepare for the next drastic drops, turbulence and unexpected twists and turns.

Today life and quite a common situation. You buy a car in a better or worse condition. You have been using it for thousands of miles over the years. Finally, there is the idea that this well-deserved vehicle should be replaced with a newer model. Sometimes the desire to have a better, more modern and fulfilling our expectations prompts us. Sometimes our decision accelerates the more and more often appearing mechanical defects, in which we do not want to fix ourselves. Regardless of whether we decide to sell a car at a low price or scrape, it may surprise us that the catalyst derived from it will prove more valuable than the car itself. Why is this happening?

Diversity on the catalyst market

Cars depending on the make, model and even country for which they are designed differ in terms of the catalysts installed, and more precisely in terms of the amount of precious metals contained in them – platinum, palladium and rhodium. You have probably heard about the exhaust cleanliness standards. These are the regulations specifying the amount of exhaust gas released from the exhaust system. In different countries and for different periods of time, these rules were shaped in a different way. The more demanding the standard, the more precious metals were used in the production of catalysts. They are responsible for the purification of exhaust gases from toxic substances. So much for theory.

Where does the catalyst price come from?

In practice, even a used catalyst can be worth a lot. Prices range from a few dozen zlotys if a substitute is involved, up to 11 thousand zlotys for the most expensive catalytic converters from Mercedes. The price difference is of course dependent on the amount of precious metals. The more they are, the more valuable the catalyst is. There are also changes in exchange rates here.

As you know, the price of precious metals, in which many people invest, is variable. The process of determining their value is quite complicated. The price is influenced by various political, economic, and sometimes social factors. However, everything comes down to the demand for a given ore. The greater the demand for a given metal, the higher its price.

One of the situations that has recently had a significant impact on the precious metal prices and, consequently, the prices of used catalysts, is the Dieselgate scandal into which well-known automotive concerns were involved. In September 2015, what many of us had expected for a long time came to light. The results from the exhaust measurements were misrepresented. Special software was installed in the cars whose task was to manipulate the obtained results. People have become aware of the fact that cars burn more fuel and emit more harmful fumes than the producers claimed. Fraud took place all over the world. Since then, cars with a diesel engine have been assigned the greatest responsibility for the state of the air we breathe. In view of the changes adopted by the European Parliament, the concerns have therefore decided to stop producing diesel, in favor of gasoline, hybrid and electric cars. However, for the last two variants we are reluctant to decide. Despite their environmental performance, it turns out that they do not break the popularity records. This applies not only to Poland but also to other European countries. There are plenty of reasons – high purchase and operating costs, too slow development of infrastructure or various prejudices that can be read about on internet forums. It is also worth paying attention to the fact that theoretically ecological cars use electricity. To produce it and then send it over the net, it is necessary to burn non-organic fossil fuels.

The result is that the eyes of consumers turned towards cars with a well-known gasoline engine.

World trends and the price of the catalyst

It is worth knowing that for the catalysts used in petrol, palladium and rhodium are used in particular. In turn, platinum is used for diesels. As you might have guessed, the “automotive revolution” has strongly influenced the prices of the above metals, and so, for several months, we can see a gradual increase in the palladium and rhodium rate, and in the case of palladium, the price of an ounce has reached historical record high several times. we noted on March 21 and amounted to PLN 1 576.60 / ounce.

The results of changes in the quotations can be easily seen in our catalog. Palladium catalysts grow in strength and become more and more expensive. Prices can often exceed the value of the car.

An example is the catalyst GM16/90467875/3093 B1 from the Opel Corsa. Its value has recently increased strongly. Currently, the retail price is PLN 1727.80.

Where did its high price come from? From the elemental composition. The monolithic laboratory analysis carried out by us using the XRF method showed that 12 2890 ppm of this element was used for the production of this catalyst, that is 12,289 g of palladium per kilogram. What is important when selling catalysts?

You can legally sell the used catalyst at the point of purchase. As you can see, you can earn a lot on it and save on buying a new device. However, in order to get the most out of it and get the best possible price, it is necessary to choose the appropriate purchase. The best in which it takes place comprehensively: purchase, analysis and valuation and conversion of the catalyst. In this way, you avoid intermediaries. In addition, the price of the consumed part is calculated on the basis of the precious metal content in the model and their current rates. A purchasing company, in order to offer you the real price, must have its own laboratory. The laboratory, which is equipped with modern spectrometers to conduct the analysis and which create people with appropriate knowledge and experience. Without this, it is impossible to reliably determine the value of catalysts.

KT0138/A2024901136/VBEHBE5172702110 catalysts are used by the German Mercedes brand. They have an asymmetrical, flat shape and numerous lateral convexities on the cover. Outlets are arranged on different planes. One is located on the side, the other is directed in turn at an angle upwards, acting as an extension of the catalyst. Their length does not exceed 45 cm, but the weight is 1.74 kg. The retail price on March 8, 2019 is PLN 1,359 (EUR 315,90). At DS AUTO collection points, prices are assumed to be around 23% higher than in other purchases. We often receive signals from our customers that the price of this model can be significantly understated.

These ceramic catalysts were used in the Mercedes Benz W 163 models in 1999. Produced by Zeuna Starker.

Mercedes Benz W 163 is a luxury ML class car. It is the first SUV brand. It is also the first Mercedes, whose production took place in Vance near Tuscaloosa (Alabama, USA). In order not to use the naming used by BMW, it was decided to change the M symbol to ML. It belongs to the first generation and for the first time it was shown to the world in 1997 in Frankfurt during the automotive show. He also made his debut in the USA.

Production lasted from 1997 to 2005. In 2001, facelift was decided, which resulted in the modification of the appearance of the rear lamps, as well as the inclusion of direction indicators in the mirrors.

It has a high towing capacity, which is typical for this type of body. It’s great for pulling heavy trailers. In 1998, the car won the prestigious title of the North American Truck of the Year. The range of engines consisted of six petrol versions, of which the ML55 AMG version could be considered the best. The maximum speed that could be achieved with it was 235 km / h, and the acceleration time “up to hundreds” is 6.8 s. There were two diesel versions – ML270 CDI and ML400 CDI. SUVs were available from 5 to 7 seats with an optional third row. The designers put a lot of emphasis on safety. The M class was the first to be equipped with electronic stability control. It is a system designed to detect the loss of driver control over the car and to initiate automatic intervention through selective braking. The car is also equipped with front and side shock absorbers that can detect the presence of a passenger in the front seat, which made the W 163 model achieve the highest possible rating in crash tests. To facilitate driving in difficult off-road conditions and to perform well on snow, it has been equipped with a four-stroke electronic traction system – 4-ETS.

It is worth mentioning that the car in June 2002 was used to build a papamobile for John Paul II. Later he also served his successor – Benedict XVI. The vehicle was equipped with a bulletproof windshield, air conditioning was installed in the cabin, and the engine was reinforced to reach 170 km / h in case of emergency.

The first generation was replaced by Mercedes Benz  W164 in 2005.

In total, from 1 April 1997 to April 2011, 1 170 000 copies of the ML class were manufactured. W 163 he was the most popular Mercedes model in this class. Almost 500,000 were sold copies.

What are the user opinions about driving?

They strongly advise against the diesel version. One should take into account the greater risk of failure of the flow meter, turbocharger or injectors. The heel of the model is, however, suspension and attention … clogging catalysts, which makes the cold engine go out right after firing.

MATIZ catalysts are used by Daewoo. They are small in size, they measure about 25 cm in length and weigh less than half a kilogram. They are characterized by a fairly symmetrical and at the same time obtuse shape. They have a metal shell, which is an extension of the cover that runs along the entire catalyst. On March 6, 2019, the retail price is PLN 105.02 (EUR 24.42). It is higher by around 15% than at competitive collection points. The catalyst numbers are not placed on the casing, so they are often confused with universal replacements.

MATIZ catalysts are used by the Daewoo brand in the Matiz 0.8 model from 1998, the petrol version. The producer was Ismeretlen.

Matiz is a compact car, produced by the Korean automotive concern Daewoo from 1998 to 2007. It was this model that became the successor of the popular Daewoo Tico in our country. His name is literally translated as “friend”. The genesis of the car should be associated with Italy. Daewoo was interested in the design of the Italdesign Lucciola model, by Giorgetto Giugiaro, which was presented in Bologna in 1993. It was an ecological vehicle, with hybrid drive and aluminum body, which was easy to recycle. The car was characterized by oval headlights, a folding roof and armchairs that could be easily manipulated. Fiat has abandoned the production of this model due to too high costs and excessive risk that design will not like it and the investment will not pay back.

Daewoo decided to take the risk. Works on the project lasted as many as 29 months! Already in March 1998, Matiz went to the Korean streets.

He achieved the greatest success in Italy, where he was most afraid of selling it. There he was sold until 2004 as Matiz. From 2005-2010, in turn, sold as Chevrolet, after the Korean company took over General Motors. In some markets it was sold as a Chevrolet Spark, which it was replaced in 2009.

The first generation was sold in the years 1999-2007. The advertisement started already in 1997 after the official presentation at the car showroom in Seoul. In order for the car to differ from the concept version from 1992 and to emphasize the flexibility of the solutions used, a decision was made to redesign the model and decided on a classic system with five doors. This resulted in the car being very successful all over Europe. Despite the small size reaching 3.49 m, the car was classified as a minivan designed for five people. What about convenience? – you ask … Is it a small car that can be comfortable despite its small size?

It turns out that it is probably not possible to design such a small space in a more functional way. In this small car you can really hold a lot. After folding the rear seats, we get a luggage rack tailored to a large station wagon.

In addition, Matiz took off in 9 color versions. What distinguishes him most is the maximum rounded shapes and the short front, thus providing excellent visibility. The whole is complemented by slightly arched circular arches and oval mirrors. During the Euro NCAP crash tests, Matiz scored 3 stars out of a possible 5. Today, this may not seem like a stunning result, but then it was more than satisfactory result. In terms of security, it is also worth mentioning the ABS or EBD system installed in it as well as the anti-burglary bars in the door. Initially, it was only produced in South Korea and dedicated to local markets. Later, production was begun in Warsaw, where Daewoo used the facilities developed by FSO. The success of the first generation was confirmed by statistical data, which unequivocally announced – by the end of 2002, 500,000 were sold in Europe. copies, including Italy alone, 157 thousand

In 2002, Daewoo Auto & Technology underwent a financial crisis and was bought by General Motors, which carried out a total modernization of the entire range of vehicles. Already in February the following year, a 1.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine was added. After 2005, the entire fleet was sold on the European market as Chevrolet. The first generation had a total of 1.4 million units.

The second generation of the car, which was produced after 2005, was the model Chevrolet M3 X Concept, which was first shown to the world in 2004 at the Paris Motor Show. The final version was shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 2005. The car has been redesigned, but the characteristic features of rounded and soft shapes have not been abandoned. This time, however, more complex lights were used that connect to the bonnet, air baffles and optional fog lights were placed in the bumpers, and the wheel arches were raised. In addition, it was decided to finish the rear with a concave window, and the rear fog lights were placed on the lower bumpers. It has also been made that the interior look more comfortable and spacious. Interestingly, the second generation achieved a worse result in the crash tests than the first one. He managed to get only 2.5 stars.

It is also worth mentioning how the car was promoted. Their advertisements have always appealed to emotions, evoking associations with love or passion, as they were aimed mainly at women or young people.

Catalysts numbered 1740183 and 1740184 are used by the German brand BMW. Produced in turn by the Eberspacher company. Their characteristic feature is the longitudinal shape and asymmetrically arranged outlets. One of them is directed at an angle of 45 degrees upwards. They measure about 45 cm in length and their weight does not exceed 0.27 kg. On the cover you can find 5 transversal recesses. The retail price of the 1740183 model is PLN 635.46 as at 28/02/2019, while the catalyst 1740184 – PLN 642.60.

Catalysts 1740183 and 1740184 are always included in the set. They were placed on BMW models – 328 528 and 728 in the years 1995-2000, in petrol cars with an engine 2.8.

You can earn 1 278,06 PLN on them on 28.02.2019 on their sale. Current prices can always be found in our price list. This is the third such case that we mention, consisting in the fact that two catalysts come together in one car. Do you remember the first two? They concerned models from BMW, however, numbers 1732952 and 1732954, as well as catalysts 7502226 and 7502222, which appear in the little-known model Z3.

Now briefly about the models in which we can find such a valuable catalyst package.

About the Series 3, from which the model 328 and Series 5 comes from, in which we can find a group of 528 already wrote. Today, we will look closely at the 728 and Series 7 models. 7 is a series of luxury cars from the C segment. The production was from 1977. The last sixth generation was created in 2015.

It was presented in Munich, in June 1977 in the form of a sedan. The model was to replace the popular E3 and expand the range of models produced by a well-known manufacturer from Bavaria. The leitmotif of the first generation was E23. Since 1977 production of Series 7 consists of 6 generations, which include:

In addition to traditional German factories in Dingolfing, from 2002, Series 7 is also produced in Thailand at the Rayong factory, which was opened in May 2000. $ 25 million has been invested in it. It also produces Series 5 and BMW X3 cars. In 2003, production in Africa was also started.

Version 728 is actually E38 728. It was produced in the years 1995-2002. Its maximum power is 142 kW, which corresponds to 193 hp. The result is that the maximum speed that the car is able to reach is 228 km / h. The acceleration to 100 km / h lasts 8.6 seconds. The characteristic feature of the car is the 6-cylinder engine 2.8. Allows for a dynamic and smooth ride. The car enjoys good opinions. It is said that in the price range of 10-30 thousand. there is no other car that would pay so much attention to passers-by. Some stop looking with delight, others in turn speed up the pace. In our country there is a common stereotype that this model is typical for gangsters or important people. If you care about your interest, choose this model. However, the biggest surprise is the fact that in a 20-year-old car there may be navigation, telephone, television or an advanced seat adjustment system. Driving pleasure guaranteed! Like any vehicle, however, it has its drawbacks. Namely, after driving many kilometers, there may be looseness in the suspension, frequent replacements of the rockers are also necessary, and the pixels in the meter tend to disappear. According to its owners, it is a car that you must love. Then, the money spent in its maintenance and repair does not count.

We often remember you about healthy business relations. Today’s day and delivery, which arrived at our headquarters in the morning, shows us in practice how important is the choice of a suitable company to cooperate with.

Each dismantling station, after demolition of vehicles, obtains used catalysts for which it takes responsibility. These catalysts must be recycled as a result of which precious metals will be recovered. Thanks to our cooperation with Unimetal Recycling – the largest recycler of this car part in Poland, both purchase and processing as well as laboratory analysis take place on site. As you probably already guessed, it saves both time and money.

Today in the morning we received a large part of catalysts from one of the major dismantling stations. The delivery weight is approximately 8,000 kg.

This delivery has already been agreed 10 days ago. The catalysts came to us properly marked with the help of stickers with numbers, which simplified the preparation of documentation.

Our role s in converting catalysts and analyzing the content ofnow lie noble elements in the supplied devices. They will be dismantled by means of hydraulic shears, then the monolith recovered from them will go to ball mills where the material will be thoroughly ground.

In the meantime, our Contractors receive an advance payment from us. On the other hand, the monolith goes to the laboratory in which we analyze using the ICP MS spectrometer. This indicates precisely the amount of platinum, palladium and rhodium. The final price is obtained on the basis of the results of the analysis, as well as the current metal prices on the global stock exchange (kitco). However, we anticipate that today the party will be worth around PLN 400,000 – PLN 600,000. You must wait a bit longer for the final quote as you can see.

Such quantities of Dodaj formularz used parts bring the best and largest dismantling stations. With such large supplies, they must choose the best recipients who will take care of their recycling and offer the best prices. The more catalysts, the more important is the selection of a proven purchase and recycler.

Catalysts number C162 are used by the Renault brand. They are known for quite a simple and flat shape. The cover has 4 transverse recesses in the center. It has asymmetrically arranged outlets – one of them is directed diagonally up. The housing has a great tendency to corrosion. The catalyst measures about 38 cm in length, and its weight is just over 1.2 kg. Its retail price as at January 18, 2019 is PLN 523.80 (EUR 121.50). These catalysts are used by the Renault brand in the production of such well-known cars as Clio and Kangoo. C162 was installed in vehicles with petrol drive and engine versions 1.2 and 1.4 mainly in 2001.

Renault Clio is a popular urban model from the French Renault group. The first generation was created in 1990 and was created to replace the Renault 5 version, produced from 72 ‘year. The car quickly gained a good reputation and became the favorite of automotive magazines, which, a few months after the premiere, called him “Car of the Year”.

In the first years of production only engines with very low capacity were offered – 1.1, 1.2 or 1.4. Only later, at the end of the decade, a larger selection was introduced and the unit 2.0 (F7R). The second generation was introduced to the car market in 1998 – eight years after the first, successful entry. The car appeared in a completely new visual style. The second generation had more streamlined and modern shapes. A lot of charm was added to the new headlights and shortened front. Like the first generation, this was also divided into the so-called “Phase”. The later, the more streamlined and tasteful shapes the model adopted. It is worth mentioning here in 2001, when the V6 version was created, to which the engine from the Laguna model was borrowed. The vehicle was characterized by 230 hp and 6.4-second acceleration “up to a hundred”. Generation III appeared in 2005, and at the moment of its presentation, the well-known Frankfurt motor show was chosen. The Nissan floorboard was used for its construction. First a version of the hatchback body was created, later joined by a station wagon, which they called the most-known name “Grandtour“. In 2007, the sports version of the F1 Team R27 saw the light of day.

The car had 197 hp and a specific appearance – yellow and black body shades.

Two years later, the second phase of this generation was modernized, making it similar to the Renault Megane. 19 equipment versions were created. The third generation project focused on safety. All the knowledge of French engineers about safety solutions has been used to ensure that the model has the highest possible category in crash tests. Renault Clio IV entered the market in 2012 and was shown to the world at the Paris trade fair. It was designed by Laurens van der Acker, who gave it a sensual shape thanks to appropriately placed notches in the car body. In 2018, the latest, fifth generation Clio appeared on the roads.

Where did this name come from? Well, the creators of the name were inspired by the beautiful Greek muse of history named Clio.

Renault Kangoo – this French passenger car known for all has been produced by Renault since 1998. Although the automotive market has been operating for 21 years, so far only two generations have been produced until now, although now only on the South American market. Belonged to the kombivan segment.

The car premiered in 1997 in Geneva. It was created to be the equivalent of Citroen Berlingo and Peugeot Partner. Its biggest advantage, which determines its functionality, is a large space and loading volume, which ranges from 600 to 3 500 l (Express).

The functionality and convenience of use also increases the possibility of a simple disassembly of seats or any modification of the location of the protective grille by the loaded loading. Also its payload is satisfactory as for a delivery truck – it ranges from 625 kg to 800 kg in the case of a reinforced version. It also has a large number of storage spaces and a version with doors that can be opened sideways (at a 180-degree angle).

It is undoubtedly the best-selling personal-delivery compact. The car is really suitable not only for running a business but also for family trips with lots of luggage.

The biggest advantages of the model are a lot of functionality, a large range of engines to choose from and good visibility. The most frequently mentioned defects, in turn, include quite a lot of noise due to the lack of adequate damping, the need for frequent pump and starter exchanges and poor quality of finish.

If you run a vehicle dismantling station, the information contained in this article may prove to be extremely useful for you.

Very often we meet with the conviction of station owners with whom we start cooperation, that in order to transport waste that they created during the demolition of vehicles, they must have appropriate authorization for such transport. They often use the services of transport companies for this purpose and unnecessarily pay for the transport of such waste (number 160801 and 160803) to the entity that will manage the waste in an appropriate manner.

Nothing could be more wrong. Relying on Article 51 para. 2 points 4 of the Waste Act, they are not subject to entry into the transport register of waste generated by them.

So if you run a vehicle dismantling station and as a result of the process of dismantling the vehicle you have recovered the waste, then you do not have to have an entry in department VII of the BDO register, which is a transport permit.

Remember that if, however, you collect waste – that is, you buy individual car parts that are in the light of the law waste, then you are required to have an entry in Chapter VII of the BDO register.

It is therefore worth having it to fully develop its dismantling station and to accept, apart from entire vehicles, also individual parts removed by car owners. Obtaining such an entry does not last long (usually about a week) and is completely free. All you have to do is complete the relevant application or update your BDO entry.

Also, remember to sign a contract only with professional waste recipients who will guarantee you fair and attractive settlement conditions.
