Catalysts with the number 2A are used by the Mitsubishi brand in the construction of exhaust systems. This catalyst has a cover length of just over half a meter. The width is about 15 cm. The weight of the ceramic insert is just over 1.5 kg. The cover is symmetrical, has flattened edges along the entire length, which tend to corrode. These catalysts were produced by the well-known Ismeretlen concern. They were used in Mitsubishi Carisma, in the gasoline version with 1.8 GDI engine in the years 05/1997 – 06/2000.
This engine version uses direct fuel injection. It was a pioneering solution at the time. The car’s power was 125 hp, thanks to which it accelerated “to a hundred” in 10 seconds.
We mentioned the Carisma model during the article about the catalyst 2U. However, it is worth mentioning the 1.8 GDI unit itself. Cars that use the above technical solution are characterized by considerable acceleration, flexibility and, at the same time, economy. The Japanese proved to be pioneers when it comes to direct fuel injection. They first applied it in Mitsubishi Galant, and then in Carisma. Currently, other automotive concerns are also using this patent.
The flexibility of the 1.8 GDI engine lies in the fact that when we are driving in city mode and a lot of power is not needed, the engine gets a lean fuel-air mixture, where air dominates. Then the fuel consumption is low and the car is economical as if we were using diesel. In faster, more dynamic driving conditions, the mixture is modified so that the air-fuel ratio is smaller (by more than half).
The biggest advantages of the 1.8 GDI model include dynamics, high acceleration, even idling, satisfactory ABS and excellent suspension. The practical strengths include a large usable space, comfortably contoured seats, good soundproofing even at high speeds and easy parking due to high maneuverability.
Drivers point out, however, the lack of hydraulic bonnet lifts, poor visibility when reversing and the corrosion-resistant body. Users also suggest that its low total weight sometimes causes problems when negotiating sharp turns.
