First of the models – BMW E36 – is the third generation of the model that became practically iconic on the secondary market, although the purchase of one with all original parts is presently practically impossible. The model was produced in the years 1990-2000. The car belongs to the middle segment. It is distinguished from the previous versions mainly by higher solidity and durability. Due to its shape it is often called ‘a dolphin’. Initially they were produced in the sedan version. In 1992 the coupe version was introduced and one year later a convertible and a 3-door compact version. In the following versions, the ABS and power steering systems, airbag and further air conditioning started to be assembled.
Today the e36 is still the same popular with fans of tuning and LPG installations, assembly of which results in usual problems with the engine. Mainly the cars with many parts that are much exploited are placed on sale. The car may be purchased now for attractive prices, however it used to be ‘a luxury good’ affordable by a few. The E36 were imported from western countries and many of them crossed borders in not the best technical condition. Why is it worth to purchase exactly this model? Even after years the e36 is considered to be one of the best versions of BMW with simple but solid construction and sport, timeless design. This in connection with a strong engine and rear-wheel drive makes the E36 attractive.
The most often underlined advantages are good handling, failure-free transmission and good engines. It is criticized due to high exploitation costs.
The second model we want to mention is BMW E46 – the fourth model of the famous Series 3. The car left production lines in 1998. It is distinguished from the previous one by a streamlined, milder shape. 3 years after the premiere, the E46 was subject to face lifting. Many times it was considered to be one of the 10 best cars of the year by a well-known automotive magazine ‘Car and driver’.
The car is in some ways connection of sport stylistics and elegance, subtlety and class. The real treat is the E46 in version coupe and convertible.
The car’s interior consists above all of characteristic dashboard (providing the driver with comfort and much space), durable finishing of the upholstery and other equipment elements and… not that spacious trunk (except for the Touring version).
In terms of technical matters, the car is rather improvement of the previous version of E36 than a breakthrough in automotive industry. Firstly, the wheelbase was prolonged and balancing of the car was improved up to the values not achieved by many of currently manufactured sport cars.
For whom is the car dedicated? Mainly for the persons appreciating this German brand who want to enjoy driving. Thanks to big choice of the bodies, it may serve both singles and families. It was produced until 2007. At present it is still the same popular. The most frequently mentioned disadvantages are i.a. failures of air conditioning, wheels and steering system and lack of tightness of the power steering system.
