Smell of exhaust inside the vehicle. Where to look for a problem?

One of the nasty malfunctions that can happen to any vehicle user is getting the smell of exhaust gases into the passenger cabin. Where to look for a problem?

DO NOT IGNORE THE PROBLEM!

When the smell of fumes is felt inside the vehicle it is not allowed to ignore this behavior. What’s more, the occurrence of such a problem does not necessarily mean a serious defect, which will entail considerable expenses. In most cases, the cause of the smell of exhaust gases in the vehicle is a leaky exhaust system.

WHERE TO START?

Diagnosis of the causes of smell of fumes inside the passenger compartment should be started by checking whether the situation is regular and whether it always occurs at the same time. In some cases, especially when our car is an urban car, and thus the length of the exhaust system is relatively short. The length of the exhaust system can make a difference, because the common problem is to suck the exhaust into the interior of the vehicle, despite the efficient system. This is because the ventilation inlets also “draw” air from under the bonnet. Getting the exhaust fumes under the hood of the vehicle is not something unacceptable. This happens most often during a stopover and a strong wind that blows in the opposite direction than the exhaust gas escapes into the atmosphere. This process, however, occurs for a short time, what is worse it can not be avoided.

IF THE PROBLEM IS ALREADY CONTINUING?

Approaching the problem purely statistically, over 90% of cases of exhaust suction into the interior of the vehicle are caused by a leak in the exhaust system. In this case, find the source of the exhaust gas, and then make a seal. At the beginning it should be remembered that even a leak in the rear of the vehicle is not likely to cause a problem. The leak testing process should start with checking the flexible connector, which is located just behind the catalyst. It is he who is the most common culprit for system leakage. If its technical condition does not raise any doubts, we will look at the connections of the central silencer and the gasket under the exhaust manifold. The exhaust manifold and the catalyst are less likely to fail.

The entry of flue into the interior of the cabin may be due to the side effect of the seized EGR valve, which is a check valve in the exhaust system. Interestingly, the problem of seized EGR and the smell of exhaust gases inside the vehicle is most often found in older vehicles. Why? Because the electronics of the vehicle did not “catch” the problem with the EGR valve, and the effects are already noticeable. In this case, we have two solutions. The first of these is its thorough cleaning, especially from soot and rust. In most cases the valve can be dismantled without much difficulty. The second solution is to buy a new EGR valve. Remember to check carefully when the item will fit into your vehicle. Let’s check the brand, model, engine and year of production.

The worst possible reason for the entry of fumes into the interior of the vehicle is a situation when we feel their fragrance shortly after starting the vehicle and starting the heating. Why? Because the only way that the exhaust can get to the heater is the cooling system. The flue gas in the cooling system is the result of failure of the gasket under the head, which is a serious failure and requires immediate repair.

When we smell exhaust in the interior of our vehicle, do not underestimate the problem, but let us diagnose and solve the cause of their appearance as soon as possible.
