The premiere of the model took place in 1997 in Frankfurt, where the motor show took place. Designed by Hartmut Warkuss, who previously worked for the Audi brand. What distinguishes the fourth generation from the predecessor is a more streamlined shape, galvanized body and greater massiveness. In 1998, a version of the sedan called Bora, as well as the first four-wheel drive golf was introduced to the market, and in 2000 the first model with a 6-speed gearbox.

It is also worth mentioning the R32 version, which was able to reach a speed of 250 km / h. In 2004, however, the production line was limited to the W12 limited edition, equipped with a 6-liter engine. The car reached 600 hp and a speed of 340 km / h. The limited version had only 600 copies.

It is from the fourth generation comes the most expensive Golf, which was sold for EUR 188 938 in 2005, at an auction. Such a high price was achieved because its first owner was the Pope, Benedict XVI.

The car could be purchased as a sedan, convertible or estate (since 1999). Despite the lack of advanced technical solutions and sophisticated design, the model enjoyed great popularity. In total, less than 5 million copies of the Golf IV were produced. On the Polish market you can still find many accidental copies, in a very bad technical condition, and the price range on advertising portals is quite large. Prices start from 3 thousand and end up at 40,000.

The car is still recommended by many mechanics, due to their cheap operation and servicing. Spare parts are easy to pick up and cheap, and mechanics have no repair problems. There is also a belief that only engine failure is able to immobilize this car.

The biggest advantages of the model are simplicity, solid suspension and durability. After the production of the model, in 2006, during the Montevideo MotorShow trade fair, the Brazilian version of the model was released.
