Catalyst 30865248 with Volvo S40

For the first time Volvo S40 was presented in 1995. Due to the body version, two vehicle names can be distinguished. The S40 symbolized a 4-door sedan, while the station wagon version was presented under the name V40. The Volvo S40 is a compact car sold and manufactured by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars.

The first generation of the model was introduced in 1995 and lasted until 2004. This model belongs to the middle class of segment D. The Volvo S40 model has replaced models such as 440 and 460. Its production in the first phase of development took place in the Netherlands at the NedCar factory.
The vehicle was built in cooperation with the Swedish-Korean two brands by using one and the same floor plate and several mechanical components for the Volvo S40 and V40, as well as Mitsubishi Carisma.
The cooperation of both brands did not bring the expected results. Volvo, praised for the exclusive vehicle brand, had to face a not very favorable opinion.
The production of the Volvo model was different from the Swedish standard. It was visible even with external styling, mainly by depriving of sharp, characteristic for this brand shapes. The quality of the S40 model gave a lot to be desired. Poor quality of materials, as well as poor precision in assembly deviated significantly from previous offers of this brand.
The poor opinion was also due to the small boot volume in the S40 471 / 855l version, and with the V40 415 / 1420l.
After a not-so-good start, the producers tried to keep the S40 model’s reputation created over the years.
The first modernization of the vehicle took place in 1999 during which the brake discs, braking and steering systems were replaced, as well as the suspension and introduction of direct fuel injection in diesel engines.
The engines in the vehicle also went through several development phases. The debut in gasoline were engines with capacity and power: 1.6 (105km), 1.8 (115km), 2.0 (136km) and 1.9 (90km) diesel.
In the following years, vehicles with an expanded range of engines could be purchased.

Volvo S40

Competition against the described model was quite broad. The largest of them are Ford Escort, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Mazda 323, Opel Astra, Renault Megane or Toyota Corolla.
The Volvo S40 was the first car to receive 4 Euro-NCAP stars, which indicated a high rating of vehicle safety.

The second version of the model was presented in the autumn of 2004. This time the production took place at the Belgian plant in Ghent, which was influenced by the takeover of the Swedish brand by Ford Motor Company. Due to the change of ownership, the Volvo S40 was built on a Ford platform along with models such as Ford Focus and Mazda 3.
Certainly, the emergence of even greater possibilities in terms of availability of engine versions was a big novelty. This time the diesel engines were expanded, while a few in gasoline were removed from sale.
The most important issue was the upgrade of 2.0 and T5 diesel engines and the new D2, D3 and D4, which were to meet the current Euro 5 emissions standard.
Another version of the vehicle also has improved equipment amenities. The new version included an improved audio system, more space in the vehicle, and enhanced emergency brake lights. In addition, changes were made to the boot lid, and a new version of the logo appeared.
Models that were produced after 2000 are much more refined and present the luxury brand Volvo developed over the years. These vehicles are also best equipped for safety.
Frequent vehicle malfunctions can occur when the timing belt tensioner is seizing.
In turbodiesels, the injection system and the wedge guidance system often fail.
When it comes to electrics, you can expect problems with the immobilizer and the central lock.
A frequent problem is suspension, which does not make it easier to navigate our Polish roads. It is worth paying attention to the sounds coming from the chassis during the test drive.

To sum up, despite the poor start and infamous opinions, the S40 is very popular.
Depending on the production year, its price ranges between 3500 – 43 000 PLN.
The catalyst model described can be found in models from 1998 and 2004/2006 in 1.8-liter gasoline engines.
