Battery is one of the indispensable parts of any car. If the battery is discharged the
car will not start. This may happen when e.g. the battery is left unused for a longer
time or is exposed to frost. If it is necessary to replace the battery it is good to know
that the old battery can be sold to recover some money you can spend for a new
one.

What is a battery?

An electrical battery is a device which stores electrical energy to be later released. It may be used many times but the total operating time is limited to a certain extent as the battery “wears out” like any other component. An average life of a car battery is about 4 to 5 years.

Batteries work in two cycles: they are charged to accumulate electrical energy or they become a source of energy. When operated, the battery gets gradually discharged. The capacity of a conventional car battery is approx. 50 Ah which means it can supply 1 A current for about 50 hours.

A car battery is not only used to start the engine but it ensures proper operation of all the electrical consumers, particularly when the engine is not running. Initial symptoms of battery problems can be recognized by the starter turning slowly. Remember that a failed battery can translate into e.g. a necessity to use public transport on a frosty morning, if your car could not start. Therefore, whenever you notice that there is something wrong with your battery, replace it.

Battery types

There are various battery types available in the market. According to the electrolyte composition the batteries can be divided into the following types: lead-acid batteries, lithium-polymer batteries, nickel-cadmium batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries and nickel-zinc batteries. Lead-acid batteries are usually used in cars. They are relatively cheap and easy to charge as compared to other solutions but they are quite heavy. For some time now gel batteries have become more and more popular. They are of the so- called maintenance-free type as they require no distilled water replenishment, their life is longer and they are more resistant to shocks.
